Matcha is a fine Japanese green tea powder made from ground whole leaves, known for its umami flavour, vibrant colour, and unique energy-boosting properties.
Our House Matcha is crafted for us in Kyoto by the esteemed Hiroshi Kobayashi, one of the most respected tea masters in Japan. Uncompromising in his pursuit of quality, Kobayashi-san’s skill lies in assessing and selecting leaves from the spring harvest, then skilfully blending them to create, batch by batch, our vibrant House Matcha.
Delightfully sweet with a delicate umami finish, this first-flush, shade-grown Matcha tea is the perfect base for a smooth, creamy Matcha latte.
This is the first product in our new Good & Proper Matcha collection.

More about this tea
Our House Matcha has been crafted exclusively for Good & Proper by esteemed tea master Hiroshi Kobayashi in Kyoto. Kobayashi-san has dedicated decades to the craft of Japanese tea - in fact, he is one of only 13 people in Japan to hold the top 10-Dan tea master rank. His particular expertise lies in his discerning selection process, choosing only the best shade-grown leaves from the spring harvest. Committed to traditional methods, he oversees every batch, ensuring the leaves are properly shaded before harvest to develop their vibrant colour and distinctive flavour. They are then skilfully blended, exclusively for us.
Working directly with a tea master of Kobayashi-san’s calibre means we can offer not only outstanding matcha, but also the kind of supply chain transparency that’s increasingly hard to come by - especially as global demand for this particular tea soars and marketing claims become harder to trust.

Why Tea Deserves Better
For too long, tea in the UK has meant cheap, dusty bags – designed for speed, not taste. As a tea-not-coffee drinker, our founder Emilie wanted more. So in 2012, she bought an old Citroën van, crowdfunded its conversion into a mobile tea bar, and started brewing proper, loose-leaf tea at events and markets around London.
What began in a van has grown into a business on a mission: to show just how good tea can be, when it’s done properly. That means better leaves, sourced with care from producers that align with our values, then brewed properly for maximum flavour. 12 years on, that mission remains the same and Good & Proper is now the proud supplier to the UK’s best cafes, restaurants, hotels and more, as well as to a loyal community of tea drinkers at home.
Our Teas
We work hard to source the best-tasting, whole-leaf teas, from producers around the world that align with our values. From Assam to Matcha, Earl Grey to Darjeeling, every batch is carefully selected by our founder, Emilie. And if it isn’t a cup of tea worth talking about, it doesn’t make the cut.
