Crafted in the hills of Wazuka by the Azuma family, this small-batch Japanese black tea blends Samidori and Asahi cultivars for a smooth yet gently brisk cup. With little astringency, it offers hints of spice, dried fruit and a gentle, lingering sweetness.

Azuma Wakoucha is grown and produced in Wazuka-cho, a mountainous region south of Kyoto best known for its tencha cultivation and matcha production. This tea, then, is part of a small quantity of wakōcha (Japanese black tea) that the Azuma family produces each year. Shortly before they are plucked during the summer harvest, the leaves are swarmed by small insects called unka. These bugs damage the leaves in a subtle way that adds character and depth to the finished black tea.

To get the best out of this tea, we recommend brewing for 5 minutes and skipping the milk to really taste this sweet, smooth, warming cup.

More about this tea

The tea fields south of Kyoto, surrounded by rolling hills, are renowned for high-quality tencha cultivation. Azuma Tea Farm is no exception. A fourth generation, family-run tea garden, the farm has been managed by Teruko Azuma for the past decade. Our intention for visiting the farm was to sample matcha. Whilst there, our Supply Chain Director, Josh, chatted with Teruko in her traditional tatami mat tasting room and got to try this delicious cup - alongside lots of matcha too, of course.

This is the first time we’ve featured a Japanese black tea in our collection - and we’re happy that to share this Azuma Wakoucha as a great place to start.

Why Tea Deserves Better

For too long, tea in the UK has meant cheap, dusty bags – designed for speed, not taste. As a tea-not-coffee drinker, our founder Emilie wanted more. So in 2012, she bought an old Citroën van, crowdfunded its conversion into a mobile tea bar, and started brewing proper, loose-leaf tea at events and markets around London.

What began in a van has grown into a business on a mission: to show just how good tea can be, when it’s done properly. That means better leaves, sourced with care from producers that align with our values, then brewed properly for maximum flavour. 12 years on, that mission remains the same and Good & Proper is now the proud supplier to the UK’s best cafes, restaurants, hotels and more, as well as to a loyal community of tea drinkers at home.

Our Teas

We work hard to source the best-tasting, whole-leaf teas, from producers around the world that align with our values. From Assam to Matcha, Earl Grey to Darjeeling, every batch is carefully selected by our founder, Emilie. And if it isn’t a cup of tea worth talking about, it doesn’t make the cut.
