How to Make Proper Iced Tea (5 of 5) - What You'll Need

This is the final edition of our 5 part How to Make Proper Iced Tea series and you are soon all set to make delicious iced tea all summer long. You’ve mastered how to prepare the tea, whether hot or cold brewing. You know how to control the level of sweetness. You even know how to build a killer drink, turning a simple iced tea into a summer recipe to impress. All that remains is to gather everything you need to get started. Here is our checklist:
1. Delicious tea
The best quality, whole leaf teas will always give you maximum flavour. Which tea you choose to use as the base for your Iced Tea, however, will of course come down to personal preference. A few of our favourites are:
-
Black Teas: Darjeeling, Earl Grey, Keemun
-
Oolong Teas: Ruby, Eastern Beauty
-
Green Teas: Jasmine Pearls, Jade Tips, Matcha
-
White Teas: White Peony
-
Herbal Teas: Rooibos, Lemon Verbena, Hibiscus
2. Brewing Kit
If you’re opting to hot brew your tea, you’ll just need whatever you normally use to brew your tea. If that’s tea bags then you can make your tea in any mug, pot or jug depending on your batch size, while for loose leaf an infuser or our ever popular Good & Proper glass teapot is ideal. For bigger batches, simply make the tea in a large measuring jug and then strain through a sieve or infuser into a second heatproof vessel.
For cold-brewing, these 1l glass bottles with an in-built filter from Hario are beautifully designed and make the process very simple. Failing that, any clean, lidded bottle or large jar will do just fine - you’ll just need to strain the leaves using a sieve or infuser when it reaches the desired strength.
3. Ingredients
Finally it is worth having a few key ingredients to hand to get you started. You may want to include more exotic ingredients in your recipes, but this will give you plenty of combinations to get going:
-
Honey or agave
-
White sugar
-
A good pile of lemons
-
A good pile of limes
-
An orange or two
-
Fresh mint
-
Most importantly - lots and lots of ice!
