This Makinohara Kukicha, or ‘twig tea’ as it is sometimes known, is an award-winning, Japanese green tea made from both Sencha leaves and stems. The unique addition of the latter, which can be seen in the mixed colour of the dry leaf, lends the infusion an extra sweetness thanks to the naturally high sugar content of this part of the leaf. The result is a sweet, easy-drinking take on the distinctive grassy and verdant profile of a typical Sencha.

This Kukicha is produced on the Makinohara Plateau in Shizuoka prefecture, an area most famous for Mt. Fuji. Located along the Oi River, this is the largest area for tea production in Japan.
